Letter from the Editor

It is hard to believe but it is school time again! I hope that you all had a lovely summer with plenty of opportunities to relax and connect with your families.  I am thrilled to be the new Director at San Marino Community Church Nursery School. I was so blessed to have had the opportunity to shadow Nancy Swanson during the month of June, and the rest of the summer has been spent getting ready to welcome all of the new and familiar faces back to school.

For those whom I have not yet met, I am a church member at San Marino Community Church, and have been teaching Sunday school here for ten years.  I have three boys, ages 12, 10 and 8, and live in Arcadia with them and my husband, Tom. I was previously a teacher at the Sierra Madre Community Nursery School, and a bilingual Kindergarten teacher in Montebello. I am an active board member of the California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools.  I am passionate about Early Childhood Education and the play-based curriculum that our school’s philosophy is founded upon.  I invite you to call or visit with me any time that you may have any questions or concerns regarding your child or the school.  I am a firm believer in parents being active participants in education, so if you have special knowledge or expertise in a particular field and you would like to share it with the school, please let me know  so we can set up a schedule for you to present.

To make sure we are all as ready as possible for the start of a new school year, we wanted to send out this newsletter highlighting upcoming dates and reminders. In the last week, you should have received a packet from SMCC Nursery School that includes the following:

  • Teacher assignment
  • Emergency and Medical Consent Form/Permanent File Card
  • Fall Orientation Coffee Reminder, including the Fall Class Coffee schedule
  • A letter addressing staff training, emergency supplies information, and release procedures in the event of an emergency
  • Emergency Release Form
  • A letter addressing safety concerns and reminders for the upcoming school year
  • Transportation Release Form

All of these pieces of paper contain pertinent information for our school.  Please read through them carefully.  Fill out all forms completely.  And, as always, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.  We are looking forward to a great year and having our classrooms filled once again with the squeals of delight coming from your precious little children.

First Day of School Information

September 9th (M/W/F and M-F classes) & September 10th (T/Th classes)

Our first day of school is just around the corner. As a reminder, our children need to bring a few things on that first day.  Please be sure to send your children with the following:

  1. Emergency and Medical Consent Card: fill out BOTH sides
  2. Clothing: An extra set of clothing (including underwear and socks) is requested for each child. Each item should be clearly marked with the child’s name. It is important for children to wear washable play clothes and rubber-soled shoes (not boots, Mary-Janes, Crocs, or open-toed sandals) for nursery school.
  3. Snapshot: Please bring an informal photograph of your child for the teacher to include on a wall display in the classroom for the school year.
  4. Blue Emergency Release Form
  5. Yellow Transportation Release Form

Nursery School Rejuvenation Project Update

Rejuvenation - August

The Campus Project under construction in late August.

Thank you to the many members and friends of San Marino Community Church and the SMCC Nursery School who contributed to the 60th Anniversary Campus Rejuvenation Project, which includes the installation of a seating area at the Nursery School entrance and re-landscaping of the surrounding planters. This inviting space will soon welcome families back to school on September 9th offering an area to connect with friends before and after school.  It’s also an investment in the school’s future as it provides an outdoor space conducive to growing the relationships of young families for the next 60 years.

In addition to celebrating our schools anniversary, the Campus Rejuvenation Project honors our long-time Director, Nancy Swanson, for her loving and dedicated leadership to the school.  The school will recognize these two achievements with a plaque in the new space.

We welcome you to partner with the donors below to bring this vision to completion. Donations may be made out to San Marino Community Church and marked “Campus Rejuvenation Project”.  Please send checks to the church office: 1750 Virginia Rd, San Marino, CA 91108.
