Letter from the President

Dear SMCC Nursery School Families,

What an exciting few weeks it has been! It’s so fun to see both familiar and new faces each morning as we all settle into our new routines. The halls are filled once again with smiles and laughter and our children and teachers are well underway to another school year.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 3rd Annual Watermelon Social on Friday, September 13th! It’s always a fun way for the kids to show their families their new classrooms and play yards, and this year was no different. I also wanted to thank everyone who attended the Fall Coffee on September 17th. It was a wonderful and informative morning and a great kick off to the year. Congratulations to the raffle winners who will no doubt enjoy their picnic day vouchers and Starbucks gift basket!  Thank you to our Hospitality Chairs, Mary Buckley and Ann Pearson, for creating such a festive event!

Don’t miss the 60th Anniversary Celebration Fiesta for SMCC Nursery School on October 20th from 5-7pm on the South Lawn. Be on the lookout for more information, but plan to join us to help celebrate and commemorate the past 60 years of our precious school. The celebration will be fun for the whole family and will include food, games, and a dedication ceremony for the Campus Rejuvenation Project. Don’t miss it!

We are excited about the kick off of the 2nd year of our Parent Education program! We will welcome Dr. Robert Riewerts, Chief of Pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park for “The Doctor is In” – on October 23rd. Sponsored by Mrs. Perth and Mrs. Fitzhugh’s classes, we hope you can all join us for this informative morning!

Thank you to everyone who has embraced our switch to Sign up Genius for sign-ups around school! The switch was seamless and appears to be going well for nutrition, cookie days, and picnic days.  There are spaces available for October picnic days, so be sure to sign up (www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D4CA5A82AA64-october/8830639) or remove your name from the waitlist for the days you want. The monthly limit only applies to the first day of sign ups, so feel free to add your child’s name to any available picnic day posted.

There are more fun events this fall that you and your children can look forward to. Photo days are ongoing THIS WEEK! So, send your child with a smile to school and our photographer will capture candid photos of each student as they play in the yards. Also, Class Coffees are set to begin, where you’ll have a chance to hear from the teachers about what your kids will be doing in the classroom this year. It’s always a great chance to hear from the teachers and meet the other parents in your class. Don’t miss it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me, Jane Walker, or any board member. I hope your school year is off to a great start!

Best,

Allison McCroskey
Nursery School Board President, 2013-2014

Message from the Director

What a great start we are off to this year! Echoes of laughter are filling the classrooms, and the teachers are all busy updating bulletin boards with Daily News and Special Persons. The children are settling into their routines, making new friends and are bounding through the doorway with excitement. What a pleasure it has been getting to know all of them and all of you.

Each summer, before the beginning of a new school year, I scour the internet for articles to share with parents about topics regarding Back to School and Separation Anxiety and other topics that are relevant to parents of young children. This summer, I came across one of my favorites, called “Cherishing Childhood”. I was reminded of the importance of appreciating each moment- the big moments and the little moments. They are easy to let slip away during our fast paced, media filled and academically pushed society. Our days are filled with so many distractions, and I appreciated the reminder to slow down and notice the little moments that will comprise our children’s childhoods.

There is finally a little chill to the air and, while it is no longer sweltering, we are not yet warming up with cups of cocoa by the fire. During this time, I encourage you to find a moment to slip outside with your little ones to look at the clouds, read a book or collect some leaves. These small but significant shared moments mean so much.

Jane Walker
Director

Halloween Costume Policy

Halloween is a truly a special time of the year.  Dressing in costume is a favorite past time of many children. However, we ask that on Halloween, you keep your child in their regular clothing for school that day. While some costumes are fun for your child, they may be scary for others.  We will celebrate with Halloween cookies and special napkins.  Thank you.
