November 2012

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
With November we begin the holiday season. Families travel and get together with cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The Swanson family knew only one grandmother who lived in Minnesota and came to California for the holidays. We have a very small family and our two sons did not really know their few cousins, aunts and uncles very well because they lived far away. However, we met two other families at SMCC Nursery School who also had extended family far away and it became a long-standing tradition to celebrate holidays together. We started out with three moms, three dads and seven children adding an occasional grandma and/or grandpa to the mix. As the years passed, we continue to celebrate Christmas Day together adding sons in law, daughters in law and now seventeen (yes seventeen) grandchildren! The sit down dinners with place cards are behind us but the fun has multiplied just like the numbers. We have danced at all the weddings and given baby showers galore. We all feel blessed to have found these friends and it just started because we were alone for the holidays.

I only mention this in case some of our nursery school families do not have extended family close enough to visit during the holidays. Look at this as an opportunity to invite other families who have a similar situation to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years with you.

Happy holidays to all,
Nancy Swanson

BOOK FAIR
The annual SMCC Nursery School Book Fair is right around the corner. Hundreds of books and educational toys from San Marino Toy & Book Shoppe will be set up in Fellowship Hall between 8:30am and 1pm on November 27 and 28. This is a great opportunity to get some holiday shopping completed and 20% of everything you buy goes directly back to the school!

This year we are delighted to welcome Tao Nyeu, award-winning children’s author of Squid & Octopus: Friends Forever. Ms. Nyeu will be signing books at the fair (on Tuesday) and also doing presentations in the classrooms with the children. Check out her whimsical and beautiful books on her website taonyeu.com. You’ll be able to pre-order any of her three books and have them signed and personalized. A great gift!

There are still opportunities to volunteer at the book fair. We have openings on Wednesday Nov 28, 10:45 – 1230pm and the all-important clean up shift from 12:30pm – 2pm. Any help is greatly appreciated. There will be a sign up sheet available beginning of November in the courtyard, near the Picnic Day sign ups.  You may also contact Hong Yoon Plurad at hongyoonplurad@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you at the Book Fair!

CHRISTMAS WISH LIST
The Annual Christmas Wish List is a long-standing tradition at SMCC Nursery School.  In the past, the financial contributions made to the Wish List have allowed us to do structural repairs and maintenance, provide teachers with new educational tools to enrich their classrooms, and bring in special programs for our children.

You will soon be hearing more about this opportunity to support our wonderful school and its beloved teachers.  Please consider making a contribution to our Annual Christmas Wish List this holiday season.
