Letter From the Director

hello-march-blue-photoTime Marches On!

I am thinking of this saying more and more as we turn the pages on our calendars.  How did spring get here so soon?

How fun it has been to watch your little ones grow from tiny little seedlings to the stronger, more capable children we see learning and hear laughing in our classrooms today.  Thank you for sharing them with us!

Spring is a busy time here at Nursery School as we gear up for our Enrichment experiences like Pump and Splash Day and The Animal Guys.  We are hoping to add another experience or two, and with your help, we can make it a reality.  Our Annual Fund, chaired by Kelly Paulus, is making great progress!  Thank you to all who have donated to the Fund.  The extra dollars make it possible for us to add enrichment experiences and additional learning manipulatives, music and art materials to the classrooms.  We have a goal of adding lofts to a few of the classrooms.  The lofts will include a reading nook on top, and space for the playhouses underneath.  Children do benefit from an opportunity to see their familiar spaces from a different perspective, and the lofts will help them to achieve this.

Picnic Days are a hit!  Thank you all for participating in this program.  Mondays and Wednesdays are particularly popular, so please be aware of this when you plan your schedule.  We very much appreciate it when payments are made in a timely manner so that we can properly plan for the days.  Also, a huge thank you to everyone who includes the dates of Picnic Day enrollment with their payment!  It makes the reconciliation process go much quicker and smoother.  If you are not sure if your child will like Picnic Day, please know that the first class is free.  All others are only $20 for the full three hours – a steal for sure!  If you think your child would benefit from staying for only the first hour and a half, that is a very viable option; the children eat lunch at 1:00 and are usually done by 1:30 pm.

Summer Fun Days will be upon us before we know it.  Registration will be available in the next week.  To help with your summer planning – Summer Fun Days will run from June 16-July 23.  The classes will run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  This will include lunchtime, so children should bring their own lunch.  We have a photo album in the bookcase in front of the office with pictures and lesson plans from summers past.  Feel free to check out all of the fun that our summer kids have.  The summer is broken into two sessions, and each is three weeks long.  Priority enrollment will go to those families who enroll for the full six weeks.

Plan to stick around for the Church Vacation Bible School the week immediately following Summer Fun Days.  VBS runs Monday through Friday from 9:00-Noon.  Registration is available on the church website, in the Church Office, and applications will be in cubbies later this week.

The following link is an article about the importance of unstructured time in childhood, and the benefits it has for us in adulthood.  Enjoy! http://www.psmag.com/books-and-culture/value-unstructured-play-time-kids-81177

Annual Fund

Thank you to all that have donated to the annual fund thus far.  We are getting closer to reaching our $10,000 goal this year, and have reached 100% participation from board members.

Please be oncookiejar the lookout for the cookie jar display being placed by the sign-in sheets of each of the classrooms.  We are using this to track class participation.  The first class to reach 100% participation will receive a cookie party at the end of the school year.  This is something the children can look forward to.

We have also ordered SMCC car stickers as a gift for any donation amount.  Please stop by Jane Walker’s office to make your donation today.  Thanks!

Clothing Drive to Benefit La Casa Community Center

It is that time of year, so please start cleaning out your closets and set aside your “gently used” clothes!  The Nursery School will have its annual children’s clothing drive to benefit La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center at the end of April.  More information will be provided to you over the next two months.  In addition to clothing in the size range of newborn to 8 years, we will also take lightly worn shoes.  This is a great way to assist local families in need, while also creating space in your closet.

Scholarship Chair
