April 2015

Letter From the Director

April iseaster-wallpapers-bird-nes-flowers-eggs one of my favorite months.  Not only is it the time of Easter and new beginnings, but also National Poetry Month.  What a great time to start reading nursery rhymes and short poems with your children – they are never too old or too young for the classics such as:

Little Miss Muffett
Little Jack Horner
Hey Diddle Diddle

There are so many great books of poetry available, and rhyming is such an important first literacy skill to develop.

April is also sometimes a time for Spring Cleaning.  If you find yourself in need of a good household purge, and you are not sure what to do with a few of your things, perhaps we can help take a few things off your hands.  We are looking forward to taking the children outside for reading and song time, and having a few of these things will help.  The nursery school is in need of:

  • some old beach towels
  • old comforters
  • extra clothes (size 4- girls and boys tops and shorts)

Enjoy this beautiful weather!  What a great time to get out and enjoy a family bike ride, a game of catch and outdoor read alongs!  When you are out and about, talk to your children about the change in weather.  Look for the new blooms or birds nests.  There is so much growing and changing on our beautiful earth, it is important to remember to slow down and cherish these gifts with our children.

“You may have tangible wealth untold;

Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold;

Richer than I, you never can be;

For I had a mother who read to me”

~Strickland Gillilan (American Publicist)

La Casa de San Gabriel Clothing Drive

Reminder: the Nursery School will have its annual children’s clothing drive to benefit La Casa de San Gabriel Community Center.  Please prepare to donate gently used clothing and shoes the week of April 27th.  The community center can use clothes that are in the size range of newborn to 8 years.  It’s a great way to spring clean and support a wonderful organization.

2015-2016 Board Members

If you are interested in joining the San Marino Community Church Nursery School Board of Directors next year, please contact President, Debbie Merryman at ddmerryman@gmail.com.  Board members take an active part in policy decisions, admissions, accounting, public relations, fundraising, equipment care, parents’ activities and many other areas.  Without the help of these Board members, the school would not be able to offer to the children and the staff the fine environment which is provided.  All parents are encouraged to volunteer for these leadership roles.  Let us know if you would like to be considered!

Spring Break

Please remember that the nursery school will be closed for Spring Break from March 30 – April 6.  School will resume on Tuesday, April 7.
