April 2014

Letter from the Director

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
― W.B. Yeats

April is here.  Time for Spring Fever!  It is hard to believe that in two short months, this school year will be coming to a close. As I visit all of the classrooms during this time of year, I cannot help but notice all of the learning and growing that is happening inside the walls of our school and outside in our play yards. Children are learning to use their words to get what they need, they are observing their silkworms grow, journaling the progress, and even our youngest children are contributing alternate endings to a story they have written.

Not only are your children learning and growing, but our teachers are, as well. In March, many of us participated in the Tour of Schools hosted by the Foothill Chapter of the Association of the Education of Young Children. It was fun to get a glimpse of how other schools use their space and spend their time at school. In January, we welcomed an Occupational Therapist and Family Advisor from the Pasadena Child Development Associates to share her insights with us regarding child development and Sensory Processing issues. Independently, your teachers spend many a weekend attending classes, conferences and workshops to help to develop their teaching strategies and classroom practices.

Learning is a part of life’s journey.  Our well-attended Parent Education Series indicates to our community and us that this is a school that takes learning very seriously. We thank you for your support of this important aspect of our program.

On March 25th, our school, the church and A Child’s Garden welcomed Betsy Brown Braun to give a talk about helping to develop Self Reliance in children. The feedback that we have received has been overwhelmingly positive. Betsy was warm, engaging and her ideas are very eye-opening. Her books are available in the office to check out, in case you missed her presentation. A very special “Thank You” goes out to Hong Yoon Plurad, Parker’s mom, for all of her hard work in coordinating this very successful event.  Informed parents truly make a difference in a community, and we are very grateful to you for participating in the opportunities to learn and grow together with your children.

April is National Poetry Month! With the warmer weather, it is a great time to grab a blanket and a book and head outside and share with your children the beauty of language. Young children love short poems and nursery rhymes.  Ask your teachers to share their suggestions for great poetry and nursery rhyme books.

If you are interested in joining the San Marino Community Church Nursery School Board of Directors next year, please contact President, Allison McCroskey at allison.j.mccroskey@gmail.com. Board members take an active part in policy decisions, admissions, accounting, public relations, fundraising, equipment care, parents’ activities and many other areas. Without the help of these Board members, the school would not be able to offer to the children and the staff the fine environment which is provided. All parents are encouraged to volunteer for these leadership roles. Let us know if you would like to be considered!
