April 2012

Saturday, March 24, was a beautiful day!  San Marino Community Church, together with the Nursery School, held an open house for the entire community. It was called “Come Take a Look!” to celebrate the competed renovation. The renovation began last June in the Nursery School the day after the children left for summer vacation. Our roof was removed and replaced and our entire school was tented. Then came the replacement of damaged pillars, repair of ceiling tiles, new paint (exterior and interior), new lighting for the courtyard, renovated kitchen cabinetry, countertop and bathroom in Room 6 and renewed landscaping. All of which was completed the day before children came back to school in September.

The open house brought new families, current families and alumni families to tour the church facility. We offered Otter Pops, popcorn and bottled water to our friends. Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Chang, Mrs. Eaton, Mrs. Fitzhugh, Mrs. Randall and Mrs. Talbot greeted everyone. It was fun to see so many of our former students all grown up now. Thank you to Mary Buckley for creating our Open House flier. Thank you to Claire Hart and Judy Rivera for helping me address invitations. And thank you to Carrie Walker, Judy Rivera, Joy Flores, and Ginger Bercaw for staffing the Nursery School table at the church courtyard.

We are blessed to have such a wonderful relationship with San Marino Community Church and glad so many of our families were able to visit us on Saturday.

I wish you all a happy Easter. We will be back in session on Tuesday, April 10.

On Friday, March 24, the Wildlife Learning Center sent two lively young women to talk to us about some exotic animals they brought to show us. We were able to “touch” some of them. They introduced us to “Strawberry” (a 26 year old sulcatta tortoise), Penny (a porcupine – …Jamie said “I don’t want to touch her!” …), Buster (a fennec fox with very big ears), Emmitt (an American alligator), Sammy (a milksnake), Chip (a chinchilla with very soft fur), Michelle (a blue tongued skink), and finally Edgar (an albino Burmese python.).  The children loved seeing all the different animals! Thank you to all who contributed to our Christmas Wish List to make this event possible.

The teachers wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our wonderful families for the beautiful flowers you brought in. They truly felt appreciated and loved by everyone!

We are organizing a clothing drive for the families of La Casa de San Gabriel. Set aside any gently used clothing for sizes infant – child size 12 that your children have outgrown and donate them to our neighbors in need. Boxes will be set up in the courtyard beginning Monday April 23 to receive and sort all donated items. Look for flyers in your child’s cubby after Spring Break for more information. This will be a great time to do some spring-cleaning and help out some local families in need!

Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 22 for our Spring Coffee. The coffee will be held in Fellowship Hall beginning at 9:15am. Our speaker this year will be Dr. Tina Payne Bryson, Ph.D., co-author of The Whole Brain Child. It should be a very interesting discussion.
